Claiming Acting or Charge Allowance
When you are required to perform the duties of a higher post, you may be entitled to an acting allowance or a charge allowance. This guide explains the eligibility rules, how the amounts are calculated, and the correct process for notifying the Permanent Secretary at the Personnel Management Office.
Check Basic Eligibility
To qualify for either an acting allowance or a charge allowance you must: (1) hold a confirmed post at Grade 7 or above; (2) have been performing the higher duties for a continuous period of at least one full calendar month; and (3) have been formally assigned the duties in writing by your Head of Department or Permanent Secretary. Allowances are not payable for informal cover arrangements or for periods of less than one month.
What type of cover are you providing?
Acting Arrangements Exceeding Six Months
If an acting arrangement extends beyond six months, the Head of Department must formally review the position and consider whether a substantive appointment should be made. Continuing to act for an extended period does not in itself create an entitlement to the post. The Permanent Secretary — PMO should be updated at the six-month mark with the reason for the continued arrangement.
