Claiming Duty Travel Allowance
When you travel away from your normal station on official government business, you may be entitled to a daily subsistence allowance, a relocation allowance on posting, or a provincial zone allowance. This guide explains the rates, the conditions under which allowances are payable, and how to submit a valid claim.
Confirm You Are Travelling on Official Duty
Duty travel allowances are only payable when you are away from your normal duty station on work that has been formally authorised in advance by your Head of Department or Permanent Secretary. You must hold a written travel authorisation or duty travel warrant before departing. Travel for personal reasons, even if combined with official business, does not attract the duty travel allowance for the personal portion.
What type of duty travel applies to your situation?
Keep Records and Retain Authorisations
Always keep a personal copy of your travel authorisation, duty travel claim forms, and any receipts for transport costs (if claimable). Finance Officers may request supporting documentation during audits. Fraudulent or inflated duty travel claims constitute a serious disciplinary offence and may result in dismissal and recovery of overpaid amounts.
