Understand How Salary Increments Work

The Gambian Civil Service salary structure is organised into grades and scales, each with a series of incremental points. You move up one incremental point each year on your increment date, provided your performance is satisfactory. An increment is not automatic if you have been subject to disciplinary proceedings or have received an adverse performance report during that year.

Withholding of Increments

An increment may be withheld if your annual performance appraisal is assessed as unsatisfactory, or if you are under active disciplinary proceedings. Your Head of Department must notify you in writing that your increment is being withheld, stating the reasons. A withheld increment does not change your increment date permanently — if your performance improves and the bar is lifted, the increment is restored from the original due date.

Raise a Query or Dispute

If you believe you have been underpaid, placed on the wrong salary point, or denied a lawful increment, write to your Head of Department and copy the Establishment Officer. Set out the dates from your appointment and promotion letters. You may request a review by the Directorate of Human Resources Management at GPPA. Keep copies of all payslips and correspondence as evidence.
